International Women’s Day
- In 1909, laboring women in Chicago—as well as female textile and garment workers elsewhere in the United States—launched an unprecedented strike and demonstration to demand higher wages, an eight-hour workday, and suffrage.
- In August 1910, at the Second International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, German and international workers’ activist Clara Zetkin proposed that March 8 be celebrated as International Women’s Day.
- Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the Central People’s Government decreed on December 23, 1949, that March 8 become the labor women’s holiday in China, granting women a half-day off.
